Raquel Marshall is a Barbadian visual artist working across multiple disciplines, with a practice that moves fluidly between photography and painting.
A recipient of the Irving Burgie award for Excellence in the Creative Arts, has participated in exhibitions locally and internationally, and completed an art residency with Fresh Milk Art Platform. Her passion for monochrome compositions was nurtured in her Barbados Community College years under the tutorship of Bob Kiss. Inspired by Joseph Cornell’s call to see the world “with the eyes of a child, fresh with wonder,” her work is rooted in observation and introspection, using image making as a way to navigate and quiet the complexities of thought.
Marshall’s photography often parallels her painting, with both mediums exploring subtle tonal shifts, texture, and form. Drawn to the quiet language of light and shadow, she plays with their interaction against positive and negative space discovering unintentional patterns-fleeting compositions found in natural environments and everyday moments. These discoveries become meditative studies where abstraction and reality gently intersect.
Through her work, Marshall invites viewers to pause and engage more deeply with the overlooked details of their surroundings, revealing a world shaped by rhythm, contrast, and quiet beauty.
