“Framing and Matting at Andromeda”
Cheryl McCollin-Walker
On Saturday, August 30th, 2025, the Barbados Photographic Society hosted a highly anticipated workshop on “Framing and Matting Photos”. It took place at the scenic Andromeda Botanic Gardens in St. Joseph. Led by experts, Markley Bryan and Niaz Dokrat, the workshop offered 12 members an in-depth, hands-on experience in photo framing and matting techniques.
Participants were guided through the entire process, starting with a demonstration of mounting artwork using ready-made mats and foam core backing. This was followed by a hands-on session on cutting and mounting custom photo mats, tailored to individual prints. The session then moved on to demonstrating how to neatly mount photographs in pre-built frames, ensuring each image was showcased perfectly.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the demonstration of stretching canvas prints onto standard-sized, store-bought stretchers—an essential skill for anyone looking to display their artwork professionally. The final session explored the use of metal frames for artwork.
The event was well-received by attendees, who appreciated the practical knowledge shared by Markley and Niaz. The comprehensive workshop also included all necessary materials, with a nominal attendance fee of $70, making it an excellent value for participants. Set against the lush backdrop of Andromeda Gardens, the event not only offered creative learning but also an opportunity to connect with fellow photographers and enthusiasts.
The Barbados Photographic Society continues to foster skills development in the local photographic community, and this workshop was another successful example of our ongoing commitment to excellence.
