Chasing Light: Barbados Photographic Society Hosts Inspiring “Sunset Light Trails” Pop-Up Education Event

Photography is often described as “painting with light,” and on the evening of Saturday, 5 July, members and guests of the Barbados Photographic Society (BPS) had the opportunity to do exactly that during our latest Pop-Up Education Event, Sunset Light Trails, expertly facilitated by Charles McClean in the heart of Heroes Square, Bridgetown.

As the sun set and the city came alive with evening traffic, photographers gathered with cameras and tripods in hand, eager to explore one of the most exciting techniques in night photography, long exposure light trail photography. The event attracted photographers of varying experience levels, all united by a passion for learning and the desire to create compelling images.

Charles guided participants through the technical aspects of achieving successful light trail photographs, explaining the relationship between shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and composition. More importantly, he encouraged photographers to think creatively about how movement, colour, and the city’s architecture could be combined to tell a story through a single image.

One of the greatest strengths of the Barbados Photographic Society is our commitment to practical, hands-on education. Rather than limiting learning to a classroom, our Pop-Up Education Events immerse members in real-world photographic situations where they can immediately apply newly acquired skills. Throughout the evening, participants received personalised guidance, experimented with different perspectives, and quickly gained confidence as they reviewed the impressive results on their camera screens.

Bridgetown provided the perfect backdrop for the exercise. The movement of traffic created brilliant ribbons of red and white light weaving through the city’s historic streets, while iconic buildings and monuments added depth and character to every composition. It was a reminder that familiar locations can become extraordinary photographic subjects when viewed through a creative lens.

Beyond the technical lessons, the evening reflected the spirit of fellowship that defines the Barbados Photographic Society. Members freely shared ideas, encouraged one another, and celebrated each successful image, reinforcing the Society’s belief that photography is best enjoyed as a shared experience.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I extend sincere appreciation to Charles McClean for his willingness to share his expertise and enthusiasm. His instruction made the session both educational and inspiring, and the outstanding photographs produced by participants speak volumes about the value of these practical learning opportunities.

I also thank everyone who attended and contributed to another successful BPS educational initiative. Your enthusiasm continues to strengthen our Society and demonstrates the remarkable talent that exists within our membership.
