The 2024 training programme for BPS photographers continued on August 24th under the direction of coordinator, Cheryl McCollin-Walker, with a food photography workshop held at the Barbados Judicial Centre.

The workshop was led by internationally reconised food photographer and BPS member, Shawn Fields, who was ably assisted by his son Joaquim and other family members. Some of the food provided as subjects to hone our skills as food photographers, was prepared by Avion Caine, an outstanding Barbadian chef and an expert food stylist.
Shawn opened the session using an extensive array of photos from his portfolio to instruct participants on the critical aspects of good food photography. Included in these were the preparation of the food, lighting the subject, equipment and camera settings. This was an interactive session from the beginning and participants were encouraged to ask questions about technical and culinary aspects of this genre of photography.

The eagerly awaited opportunity to actually photograph items of food displayed on five tables in the adjacent room soon came. Photographers used ambient light, strobes and also a light wand to practice on a variety of cakes, Sushi and the Piece de Resistance created by chef Caine.

It was amazing to watch chef Caine at work, meticulously plating and styling this dish as a piece of art for the photographers to practice their skills.

Above, chef Caine’s Piece de Resistance, shows a complexity of colours, shapes, textures and elevations.

After an extended photo-taking session, the photographers reconvened to share their experiences and to seek further instruction on tips and techniques, which were readily provided by Shawn and Avion.

At the end of the workshop, President, Bradley Benskin, Training Coordinator, Cheryl McCollin-Walker and the participating photographers all thanked Shawn and the executing team for a really informative, hands-on session, and for the learning that was experienced at the workshop.
