Third annual Caribbean Photo Walk
The third annual Caribbean Photo Walk was held on Sunday, October 27th 2024, when members of the Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados photographic societies simultaneously engaged in photographic excursions in their respective territories.
The idea of a Caribbean Photo Walk was broached by Belinda Nethersole of Jamaica in 2022, as a means of forging and fostering a relationship among the photographic societies in the region. The proposal was for each territory to photograph a scenic route or location on the same day and then to submit the best photos to a judging panel for helpful critique.
The first two photo walks in Barbados took the routes from Bay Street to Bridgetown central and from Pebbles beach to the Hastings Boardwalk respectively. This year, for the third annual photo walk, the route chosen was Bathsheba to Tent Bay on the east coast. The initial thought of selecting the route from Six Men’s Bay to Speightstown was scuttled due to the extensive damage to the shoreline by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
Our photo walk at Bathsheba was planned to commence with the sunrise on October 27th, and as we were going to be gathering while it was still dark, our faithful PRO, Michael Turton made a visit to the area beforehand to ensure that the safest walking route was followed.
On the morning of the walk, a record twenty-eight (28) persons made their way, mainly from the west and south coast areas and turned up for 5.15 AM. rendezvous time at Bathsheba. After a short welcome and briefing session, photographers dispersed onto the beach to capture the first light of the sunrise.
During the course of the first hour of light, photographers were seen photographing the majestic off-shore rocks, green, mossy shoals, birds, crabs and flotsam on the sand. Later, the group moved on to Tent Bay to photograph fishing boats at sea and on land and the flora and fauna present at the location.
The photo walk finished with light refreshments and a recap of the morning’s experience among the photographers, who shared their ideas of photos that they may be submitting to the photo walk judging panel. A great day was had by all and we look forward to the next Caribbean Photo Walk in 2025.
